The Nightcaps

Stalks the width of a doorway, and caps over them like low roofs. The tallest of them is above the trees.

The Nightcaps is a climbable ring of giant fungi in Deepwood: 10 caps stepping up to a floor 27.6 m above the ground under it.

The climb

10 caps, each one a step up from the last. The smallest step is 2.7 m and the largest 3.0 m, and both numbers are chosen against what a body can actually do rather than against what looks right: the smallest is above the height a plain jump clears, so the ring cannot be walked up, and the largest is below the apex of a pogo hop, so it cannot become impossible either.

Every cap top you can stand on is the circle inscribed in the drawn shape, never the drawn shape itself — so there is no rim of floor sticking out past the geometry holding it up. The top floor is 6.4 m across.

What is up there

Twenty-eight metres up, on a floor of fungus, with the deepwood underneath you in every direction.

A view, and nothing else. Nothing on this climb is derived from a relic, a Fragment, a quest or a season, and nothing ever will be — the argument for a climb like this is that it is worth doing for its own sake.
