Landfall

Seventeen stones, cut square and set in a ring. One gap faces the water, one faces the climb. Somebody wanted whoever washed up here to know which way to go.

Landfall is where every Drifter wakes: a ring of 17 standing stones on the shore, one gap facing the water and one facing the climb.

Where you wake

17 standing stones — 4 gate posts and 13 in the crown — with 12 avenue slabs and 3 steps between them, 38 solid pieces in all. The two gaps in the ring are named: The Sea Gate and The Ascent Gate. One points at the sea, the other at the nearest tower, and neither bearing is written down anywhere — both are derived, so if the world moves the gates turn to follow it.

The sea is 111 m east of the ring and the ground here is 5.2 m above it.

The prologue

A bird called Lumi drops a pebble on your head, which she maintains was a small part of the plan. You're awake! Good. The rock was a small — a very small — part of the plan.

Then 3 lights along the shore, in any order you like, and the gate of the first ruin beyond them. Can you hear that? I can. Or rather… I think I remember it. The world answered. You. That's usually a good sign.

At the ruin the world answers for the first time. Did you hear that? The world can still sing. Four voices. All four of them half. That last line is the whole premise of this world, and it is said before you have done anything to earn it.
